Reflection on Problem Solving
Problem solving is an essential component of mathematics. It allows students to access their creative and critical thinking skills, which will help them in and out of the classroom. Problem solving activities can be done independently or with groups. Group work can be very beneficial by promoting the ability to communicate mathematically. It is important, as a teacher, to utilize different types of problems in order to get students thinking. There is so much straight memorization in education, which doesn't allow for learning and thinking skills to develop. Giving students different types of math problems to solve fosters critical thinking and demonstrates that there may be different ways to come to a solution. In this regard, group work and class discussion can be beneficial because the students can share the many ways in which they've found a solution.
